Federal Work-Study Request Form
Meeting your agency’s staffing needs is much easier today thanks to the Higher Education Amendments of 1992. This change in federal policy permits Duke to devote seven-percent of the funds allocated to its federal work-study program to compensate undergraduate and graduate students who choose to work for non-profit agencies and government offices in community service positions. To date, the university has placed students in over 40 local non-profit and governmental agencies, where they have performed more than 50,000 hours of community service work. Students participating in the program report that they are enjoying the opportunity to work on community-based projects, and employers report that they are very pleased with the skills, enthusiasm and commitment students bring with them to their jobs.
Corps students can help your organization in at least three ways. First, if you hire a Duke federal work-study student, your non-profit agency or governmental office will be reimbursed 75 cents for each dollar paid in wages, which range from $7.00 to $15.50 per hour. This means that if you were to hire a student at the average, undergraduate hourly wage of $9.00, your agency would have to pay only $2.25 for each hour worked. Second, you will be able to recruit employees who can work up to 19.9 hours per week from a student body that is comprised of some of America’s most talented young people. You will be able to hire students who, in addition to having uniformly strong basic communications skills and quantitative abilities, often possess special computer science and foreign language expertise as well. Third, as an actual or potential off-campus work-study employer, you will be invited to send representatives to Duke Center for Civic Engagement-Durham Programs (DCCE-Durham) events for undergraduates interested in unpaid internship and volunteer opportunities.
