I want to volunteer. How do I get started?
First, you should visit the DCCE-Durham Website and use the searchale database of volunteer opportunities. You may access this database by clicking on Volunteer Opportunities under the Getting Involved link. 2) You may join one of the student service groups on campus. These groups are listed on the Duke Office of Student Activities and Facilities (OSAF) web site. 3) The DCCE-Durham sponsors a Volunteer Fair annually during September. Many local non-profit organizations set up displays and look forward to meeting and talking with students about their volunteer needs and programs. 4) You could also enroll in one of the many service learning courses offered each semester. These courses allow students to tie together what they have learned in the classroom and what they have experienced at their service sites.
How do first-year students get involved with service?
- The Dean of Students Office has a First-year experience Web site that will direct new students to helpful information about academics and social life.
- There are tutoring options through the America Reads and Counts Program and WRITE Now! along with opportunities available through the Program in Education.
How do I find out about work-study positions within local non-profit organizations?
You must first be sure that you qualify for Federal work-study. Your financial aid advisor will be able to provide you that information. Once you confirm this, you may view work-study listings online under the Get Involved Tab. Contact the agency directly if you are interested and they will explain their application process.
