WRITE Now! is a volunteer literacy program focused on creative writing techniques and strategies that will assist fourth grade students as they prepare for the North Carolina Writing Assessment Test each spring. Duke students provide small group tutoring in rotating work centers using creative word games such as Boggle and word find puzzles to help students build their vocabulary and grow comfortable with writing assignments similar to what they may be required to do in order to pass the end-of-grade assessment.
Volunteer recruitment takes place each semester for limited daily spots. Volunteers are asked to make a one hour commitment, for one, preferably two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday from 10:45-11:25 a.m. This is a great opportunity for any student here at Duke interested in child centered careers, such as teaching, or not. The benefits you receive from giving back are bigger than you can imagine.
