The Duke Center for Civic Engagement - Durham Programs bestow the Lars Lyon Volunteer Service Award upon one rising sophomore, junior or senior in April of each year. To receive consideration, undergraduates must have performed exemplary volunteer service while at Duke and be nominated by a member of the faculty, staff, or student body, or by a representative of a non-profit organization or public school in Durham. The recipient of the award receives a partial scholarship toward his/her tuition the following academic year.
At the award ceremony, the Duke Center for Civic Engagement - Durham Programs and the Duke University Office of Community Affairs also recognize the outstanding service of a university employee nominated by a representative of a local non-profit organization or public school. The non-profit nominating the outstanding Duke employee volunteer, receives a support gift from the university.
The Duke Center for Civic Engagement - Durham Programs will announce the call for nominations for the 2010 Lars Lyon (Student) Service Award and the Duke University Employee Community Service Award during the Spring semester.

The Lars Lyon Award is made possible by a memorial endowment established by the friends and family of Lars Lyon, a Duke mechanical engineering student who died in 1988 of a rare cancer. While at Duke, Lars was an active and enthusiastic volunteer with Circle K and Ronald McDonald House among other service organizations.
